Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya says that if the government wants to hold the local government polls this year they must be held on Dec. 09.
If the government fails to meet that deadline then the election will have to be postponed for Saturday of the first week of next January, he says.
Though parliament has passed the Local Government Elections (Amendment) bill last week the Commission has not received it, he said, adding that when the commission received the new legislation it would commence work to hold the next local government polls.
Deshapriya said he would meet the returning officer of Jaffna District tomorrow (29) to discuss the procedures pertaining to the elections and he would meet the latter again on Sept 03 in Jaffna to finalise matters related to holding the local government polls in the district.
Deshapriya said there would more than 4,000 wards in the country under the new electoral system.
