The reports of the three committees appointed by the United National Party (UNP), on party reforms and way forward, would be studied beginning from April 05, UNP MP and Chairman of the National Youth Front, Kavinda Jayawardana said yesterday told the media.
“We could only get about 30% of the vote at the last local council elections. This was a shock and we have appointed committees, which will tell us how to effect a course correction. These committees will look at reforming the yahapalana government, restructuring the party and to consider the proposals we have submitted. The committee reports will be studied after April 05.
Although a number of people were demanding a change at the helm of the UNP there was no one who could replace the current leader, MP Hirunika Premachandra, who also addressed the press conference said.
“We see Wickremesinghe as the only person who can hold the position as for now. In the past there were six or seven leaders who could easily take up the position of party leader. People knew who would replace the incumbent leader but that situation has changed.”
