UNP confident of meeting JO challenge

The UNP says there is absolutely no threat to government stability in spite of various speculative reports and statements attributed to Joint Opposition spokesmen.

Top UNP spokesperson and State Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardene, yesterday assured that the ruling UNP-SLFP coalition remained strong and confident of facing political challenges.

Wijewardene was addressing the media at Sirikotha.

The Colombo District MP alleged that the JO was making an attempt to undermine the government by spreading lies in respect of the ongoing constitutional making process.

The State Defence Minister said that there was no basis for accusations that the government planned to deprive Sri Lanka of its unitary character as well as special status for Buddhism.
