University non-academic staff expected to end strike on Wednesday

The strike launched by the non-academic staff of Sri Lanka Universities is expected to end on Wednesday following successful discussions held  with the Minister of Higher Education.

The University Trade Union Joint Committee (UTUJC) co-chairman Edward Malwattage said the non-academic staff of the universities have decided to end the strike that was continued for 34 days from Wednesday, 4th April.

The union official said the decision to suspend the strike was taken at a discussion held today with Minister of Higher Education and Highways Kabir Hashim.

More than 15,000 non-academic workers from 15 Sri Lankan state universities launched an indefinite strike on February 28 making six demands including a 20 percent wage rise, a language proficiency allowance, increased concessionary loans, the introduction of medical insurance and a pension scheme
