Three Sri Lankan fishing trawlers released from Indian custody

Three Sri Lankan fishing trawlers seized by the Indian Coast Guard for trespassing into the Indian territorial waters, have been released form Indian custody on Thursday (14).

Signifying the goodwill between the two countries the trawlers were repatriated to Sri Lanka, with the assistance of Sri Lanka Coast Guard, Sri Lanka Navy media unit said.

These fishing trawlers had been seized in Nagapattinam seas, India in 2015 and 2017.

The repatriation of trawlers took place at the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) north of Kankesanthurei.

An Offshore Patrol Vessel of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard and the Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Ameeya’ were deployed for this mission.

Having escorted the fishing trawlers to the Kankesanthurei harbor, they were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries in Jaffna.
