Supreme Court to hear challenges to 20A on Sept. 06

The Supreme Court on September 6, will hear the petitions filed against the twentieth Amendment to the constitution which seeks to hold the provincial council polls in all the provinces on the same day.

Yesterday the petitions so far filed were called before the supreme court and re-fixed for support on September 6.

The Bench comprised Chief Justice Priyasarth Dep, Justice Anil Gooneratne and Justice Vijitha Malalgoda.

The petitions, had said that the term of the Uva Provincial Council commenced on October 8, 2014.

Its five year term will end on October 8, 2019. If the Twentieth Amendment was enacted, Parliament would dissolve the council on October 2019. Consequently, the elections of other provincial councils too could get postponed till 2019.

This is a violation of the sovereignty of the people and the right to franchisee. IT should be passed with a two third in parliament or by a referendum before the people.
