Sri Lanka to issue electronic passports with biodata chip

Sri Lanka’s Department of Immigration and Emigration, in parallel to introducing bio data of the holder into the process making passports, has started initial measures to introduce an e-passport.

It has also been identified as an essential part of the National Digitalization Program.

Under the procedure, a passport in an electronic format with an electronic chip that includes the biodata of the holder will be issued.

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a joint proposal made by Minister of Internal Affairs, Wayamba Development and Cultural Affairs, S.B. Nawinna, and Minister of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure with Electronic Format Harin Fernando, to implement the above project after a proper study and under a public- privet partnership.
