A special four-hour operation launched Saturday morning covering all police divisions across the island has made 2,879 arrests for various violations of law, Police Media Unit said.
The special police operation under the direction of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundera was carried out between 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. Saturday by all police stations in the country.
As a result of the operation, 1,031 people with arrest warrants and 800 suspects wanted for various crimes have been arrested. Three were arrested for illegally possessing fire arms without a valid license.
The police also has taken measures to file cases against 7,516 traffic violations during the island wide operation.
The emergency operation was carried out on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police in order to prevent crimes and minimize road accidents. Such operations will be carried out regularly throughout the country, the police said.
