Speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday said that he would this week sign the Local Government Elections (Amendment) bill passed in Parliament last week.
Jayasuriya said so when he was contacted for comment on a statement by Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya that the latter could hold the much-delayed local government polls in December, if the Speaker signed the new legislation on or before Sept 15. Speaker Jayasriya said he would sign the bill as soon as possible and had already given instructions to relevant officers to expedite the process.
There were some translations of the bill to be completed, Jayasuriya said, adding that he instructed the Department of Legal Draftsman and the Attorney General to expedite processes giving utmost priority to give the legal effect to the new bill.
Speaker Jayasuriya said that he was personally happy to see that much awaited task was nearing completion and it was his wish to see that the local government bodies becoming active once again.
