Separate Committee to probe conduct of officials during fuel crisis

A separate Committee would be appointed to inquire into alleged sabotage by some officials, causing the recent fuel shortages, the government said yesterday.

Co-Cabinet Spokesman and Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera said the Committee that was appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena earlier this week, was for the purpose of restoring petrol and diesel supplies to normalcy.

The sabotage aspect would be dealt with by a separate Committee, which would be constituted shortly, he revealed.

“We suspect that there was sabotage, since some officials had initially released available fuel stocks to the market in short supply, leading to panic and motorists purchasing stocks in excess of their normal requirements” , Jayasekera noted adding that such actions had aggravated the situation.
