President Maithripala Sirisena would reveal the government’s position on the SAITM (South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine) issue on Monday, Higher Education and Highways Minister Lakshman Kiriella told Parliament yesterday.
Answering a question raised by MEP and Joint Opposition Parliament Group leader Dinesh Gunawardena, Minister Kirielle said the government had always been flexible in its discussions to resolve the SAITM problem.
Minister Kiriella requested the anti-SAITM groups to reach middle ground and help find a solution. “We are ready for any solution except closing down the SAITM. SAITM cannot be abolished. If we do that the SAITM students will go to courts against us. A court order in this regard is expected in November or so. Let’s await for the Supreme Court determination. We are ready to end this problem in such a manner that the rights of the SAITM students won’t be violated.”
