Poor attendants in parliament

Attendance of Members of Parliament at the special sittings yesterday to mark the 70th anniversary of parliamentary democracy was very poor.

The special sittings commenced around 2.30 pm with President Maithripala Sirisena attending. Speakers and Deputy Speakers from the parliaments of SAARC nations and the members of Colombo based diplomatic corps were present in the Speaker’s gallery.

It could be seen from the galleries that MPs of both sides including the front row members and a majority of backbenchers were absent.
