Police launch Investigation against Hambantota protesters

Police have deployed several special police teams to investigate on the people involved in the protest in Hambantota on Friday in violation of a court order, Police spokesman SSP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

Police Media Spokesperson said the investigations are being carried out under the supervision of the DIG in charge of Matara and Tangalle.

The investigation is conducted into violation of laws, damage to public property, injuries to four police officers and obstruction of duty of the police by the protesters. It will be conducted based on media reports and eyewitness accounts of the police, the Spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, Western Provincial Councilor Upali Kodikara, Deputy Chairman of the Southern Provincial Council Sampath Athukorala and Major Ajith Prasanna, who allegedly headed the protest defying a court order, have been summoned to the Hambantota police headquarters today (Oct. 10) to record statements on the charges.

Hambantota Magistrate Court Thursday issued an injunction restricting the protesters entering the vicinity of the Hambantota Port, Indian Consulate and the roads leading to the Hambantota Port during the protests. The Magistrate also ordered not to block the roads and inconvenience the public.
