Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told parliament today that the Provincial Councils Amendment Act is passed according to the powers vested in the parliament and that he is prepared for more discussions on it.
Also the municipal councils and urban Councils Act and the Pradeshiya Sabha act were presented in parliament today for amendments as well.
Deputy Speaker Thilanga Sumathipala informed parliament that the Speaker has certified the Provincial Council Election Amendment Act on 22 September.
MP Dinesh Gunawardena has said that the Sri Lanka Bar Association has expressed its opinion that the procedure followed to enact the law was inappropriate and they plan to meet the President and the Prime Minister to rectify the procedure.
PM Wickremesinghe said that he spoke with the President of the Bar association and asked him if there was any problem. He added that he had discussed the Act with many parties and they agreed and voted on.
The Premier said that he told the President of Bar Association that he would be given an opportunity to discuss with all parties after consulting with party leaders.
“This is a parliamentary procedure decided by the parliament under the 4th clause. It was not a decision taken by a single party. And if the Bar Association has concerns there is room for discussion,” the Premier said.
Minister of Local Governments and Provincial Councils Faizer Mustapha presented the municipal councils and urban Councils Act and the Pradeshiya Sabha act to the parliament.
