PM calls for closer ties with China

The government wants to further strengthen Sri Lanka’s bilateral relations with China, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said, writing to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

In a felicitation message to the Chinese President, Wickremesinghe said that Sri Lanka – China relations had made tremendous progress in the recent past, encompassing various sectors providing rich dividends to both countries.

“I have great pleasure in extending to your excellency, my warm regards and best wishes on the re-election as the Chairman of the Communist Party and the President of China for an extended tenure in recognition of the success under your able leadership,” Wickremesinghe said.

 

While in the opposition Wickremesinghe was a staunch critic of Sri Lanka’s deepening ties with China and some of its infrastructure projects, including the Colombo Port City Project.
