PC polls to be postponed

The government said yesterday that the Constitution would be amended with a view to holding all Provincial Council Elections on the same day.

Lands and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Gayantha Karunathillake, addressing the weekly Cabinet Press Briefing at the Information Department said that the current method of conducting elections in different regions on separate days, had resulted in the waste of resources, disturbances in the provision of government services to the public, violence associated with polls activities, electoral fraud and increased misuse of state-owned property.

Accordingly, the proposal by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to amend the Provincial Council Elections Act to ensure that elections to all provinces were held on the same day had been approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on Tuesday, he added.
