Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday told Parliament that there would be purge of government officials who derail and sabotage government programs.
Responding to a question raised by UPFA MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara, he said there were some officials put in various places by the previous government now sabotaging the government’s progressive projects. “There are some we have identified. We would remove them from their posts soon after the budget”.
MP Nanayakkara demanded to know whether the government was under the powers of the Treasury or vice versa.
The Prime Minister said: “There was a time when the government was under the Treasury and the Central Bank Governor. There was a time when secretaries never came to committees of parliament. They had such powers. We changed that. We have brought the Central Bank and the Treasury under the powers of parliament. We have COPE, we have the budgetary committee and given powers
to them. Now the officials come here. We have to repay huge loans. We would do so within our time.
