About 462,815 persons from 133,678 families were affected by the prevailing drought in the Northern Province which had not received rains for more than eight months, the Northern Province Disaster Management Center said yesterday.
Jaffna is the worst affected with 126,296 persons of 34,049 families living in 276 GN divisions undergoing hardships. Chavakachcheri has been identified as the Divisional Secretariat with the highest number of drought-affected persons in the district.
According to Mulaitivu District DMC sources, there are 115,308 persons of 35,730 families living in 134 GN divisions without access to water as almost all wells and waters sources have dried up. Puthkuduurippu is the worst affected Divisional Secretariat in the district.
The Vavuniya Divisional Secretariat has recorded the highest number of affected persons in the Vavuniya District, where 85, 571 persons from 24,507 families living in 102 GN divisions are without water.
In Kilinochchi District, 83,378 persons of 24,066 families living in 95 GN divisions have been similarly affected by the drought. Karachchi Divisional Secretariat has the highest number of affected persons.
According to DMC sources, 54,150 persons from 15,384 families in 77 GN divisions are facing hardships in the Manna District owing to the drought. The highest number of affected persons of the district has been reported from the Musali Divisional Secretariat.
