Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says the economic development in the North must be a priority if the entire country is to develop as the Northern Province has the least economic progress.
“Today, we can see the least economic progress in the North of Sri Lanka. Almost every other region is undergoing economic development,” the Prime Minister said at an event yesterday in Mannar.
“If the entire country is to develop, we must reach an annual growth rate of more than 6%. The Northern economy must be developed alongside this,” the Premier pointed out.
He said such development will benefit, not merely that region, but surrounding regions as well.
“If we are to increase our growth rate, we must pay careful attention when developing Sri Lanka’s economy,” he emphasized.
He said the government’s priority is development and for this, reconciliation is a necessity.
The Premier said that through coexistence and a political solution it will be possible to generate sustainable development in the war-torn region.
