Non-academic strike likely to be over at last

They university non-academic staff strike, which has dragged on for nearly 40 days is likely to be over shortly, Inter-University National Trade Union Federation Joint Chairman Gayan Nimesh Peiris says.

Peiris said the University Trade Union Joint Committee (UTUJC) would have ended the strike yesterday if not for a lapse on the part of the Ministry of Higher Education and University Grants Commission (UGC).

“Minister of Higher Education Kabir Hashim promised us a 10% salary hike on April 02. But we had to continue with the strike because University Grants Commission (UGC) failed to issue a circular granting us the 10% as promised by the Minister; the Finance Ministry had not written to the UGC, guaranteeing that it would provide the necessary funding for the pay hike.
