President Maithripala Sirisena says that there is no change in the government’s policy decision on banning polythene and plastics and the ban will remain unchanged.
The President said the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has been entrusted with the responsibility of preparing the necessary groundwork to promptly implement the ban.
This was stated at the progress review meeting of the Mahaweli Development and Environment Ministry held on Wednesday under the patronage of the President.
The government has decided to restrict the use of polythene to minimize impact of disposing of such items on the environment and a ban on certain polythene items will go into effect from the first of September.
President Sirisena said the necessary decisions will be taken on banning polythene, which is a great challenge to the environment, just the same way the government acted on banning asbestos and tobacco.
The President also pointed out the importance of an attitudinal change in the public on polythene use as the decision to ban was taken for the future of the country.
