The Department of Meteorology warned that atmospheric disturbances are likely within the next few days due to heavy Southwest winds.
Southwest winds would also result in heavy rains. Showers or thundershowers are expected to occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts. Rains are also expected in North-Western and Northern provinces as well, the department said in its weather forecast.
Showers or thundershowers were predicted at several places in Eastern and Uva Provinces after 2.00 pm.
The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued landslide warnings in several areas with the rainfall within the past 24 hours exceeding 75mm in most parts of the country.
It cautioned people to be alert to the possibility of landslides, slope failures, rock falls, cut failures and ground subsidence in Eheliyagoda divisional secretariat division and surroundings areas.
The NBRO said people living in Karadana North and West, Kalatuwawa West, Makota, Deiyagala, Welligoda, Bopatta, Athgangula, Mahahara, Thalawitiya and Arapola GN Divisions should also exercise caution.
