With the increase in the number of members of local government bodies under the new electoral system, the government would have to allocate additional funds to them, Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Faiszer Musthapha said yesterday.
Addressing the media after signing a gazette notification as regards the number of members to all local government bodies at his office in Colombo, Minister Musthapha said the infrastructure facilities would also have to be developed in parallel with the increasing number of members.
Asked whether the additional expenditure the state would have to incur due to the increase in the number of local councillors Minister Musthapha answered in the affirmative, but said he could now divulge the amount.
The gazette notification, signed by the Minister, was to be sent to the Department of Government Printer yesterday but the Ministry Media Spokesman Gotabhya Sumanasekara said that they didn’t know when the gazette would be issued.
The Department of the Government Printer, contacted for comment said, the date when the gazette should be issued was decided by the respective Ministry and they should send a request to that effect. If it was regarding some urgent matter and it was asked to print it within a day and the department could issue it on that day itself.
Referring to the elections, Minister Mustapha said, “Now the pitch is ready and Election Commission has no obstacles to hold an election.”
