Many youth forego higher education to drive tuk-tuks

Higher Education State Minister Mohan Lal Grero says most young men opt to drive three wheeler instead of pursuing higher education.

“Today, when we analyse the trends in university admissions, we can see the majority of university entrants are females. Sixty five percent of students entering universities are girls. The boys choose to drive three wheelers and earn a living. This is a very unfortunate situation.”

The minister was addressing a ceremony at the Bauddhayathana Dharma Vidyalaya at Watarappola Road in Mount Lavinia to mark the donation of furniture to the school recently.

The Minister said: “There are more than 1.5 million three wheelers in the country now. Dhamma schools have been badly affected by private tuition classes on Sundays as Ven Diviyagaha Yasassi Thera has pointed out. The teachers running private tuition classes should let children be free on Sundays so that they can attend Dhamma schools. I as a private tuition master never held classes on Sunday.”
