Finance and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera, today at 3.00 pm, will present to Parliament budget proposals for 2018.
This will be Samaraweera’s maiden budget as the Finance Minister, the 72nd budget of the post-Independence Sri Lanka and the fourth budget of the incumbent government. The present administration presented a mini-budget in January, 2015 and two full budgets in 2015 and 2016.
Today’s budget is considered the second reading of the appropriation bill presented to parliament by State Finance Minister Eran Wickramaratne on Oct. 09. Second reading debate of the budget, scheduled to commence tomorrow, will continue till Nov. 16. The vote on the second reading debate is scheduled to be taken on Nov. 16 evening. Third reading debate will continue from Nov. 17 to Dec. 09. The final vote on the budget is scheduled for Dec. 09.
The appropriation bill presented to Parliament by Minister Wickramaratne has estimated the total government expenditure at Rs. 3, 982 billion (Rs 3, 982, 367,818,000) for the next year.
