The government wants to hold Local Polls and Provincial Council Elections together, Health Minister Rajtha Senaratne said on Friday.
He said that the delay in holding local polls had nothing to do with the government being scared of elections but due to issues that had cropped up in the re-demarcation of electoral boundaries by the previous Rajapaksa regime to suit their vote base and also proposed amendments to the Local Government Elections Act that had encountered stumbling blocks.
The delimitation process has to carried out in a manner that stands the test of time ,he emphasised.
Senaratne said that the government intends holding polls to all Provincial Councils early next year and on a single day.
“We want to include elections to local authorities also on the same day. This would save a huge amount in financial resources, manpower and also eliminate corruption to a great exent.”
