Local govt polls in early January

The long-awaited local government elections would be announced in October and held at the end of January, the Election Commission sources said yesterday.

Although the Local Government Elections Amendment Act was now effective as the Municipal Councils Ordinance and the Urban Council Ordinance had not been amended, the local government elections could not be announced, sources said.

They said that as the government had said that relevant acts would be amended and the shortcomings in them rectified within this month, the Elections Commission was preparing to announce the elections.

As the new voters list would be made effective next month, the Commission was planning to conduct the election according to that electoral list, sources said.
