Prison Reforms, re-settlement and Hindu Religious Affairs Minister D. M. Swaminathan has ordered his Ministry Secretary W.M.P.G. Wickramasinghe to transfer the Kalutara Prison Commissioner with immediate effect.
The Minister has ordered an independent investigation into the incident where an underworld gang attacked a prison bus transporting a group of inmates to the Kaduwela Courts on Feb. 27, killing seven of them including two jail guards. Among those killed was the notorious underworld leader ‘Samayan’.
Ministry sources said the decision to transfer the Prisons Commissioner was based on the findings of the three-member committee appointed to report on the incident.
The report has revealed that the inmates at the Kalutara Prison had been allowed to use mobile phones and such devices and another banned items including tobacco were smuggled into the prison inside sacks of vegetables supplied to the prison.
The report has also disclosed incidents where prison officers assaulted inmates.
