LG polls will be held towards year end

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday evening met representatives of several political parties including the JVP and the SLFP and the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) at the Temple Trees for a discussion on the much-delayed local government election.

Minister Mano Ganeshan, who represented the TPA, later told the media that it had been resolved at the meeting that the local government polls would be held either in the last week of November of the first week of December this year after laws were passed by Parliament.

The Joint Opposition (JO) did not attend yesterday’s meeting. JO Leader Dinesh Gunawardena told the media that his outfit had made its position on the LG polls very clear and it would fight for protecting the people’s franchise. He said the mini polls had to be held forthwith.
