“The 2018 local government elections will be held before January 31. The notice calling nominations would be made on November 27 and received them in December,” Power and Renewable Energy Deputy Minister Ajith P. Perera said.
Addressing a meeting held at the G.M. Restaurant in Yatiyana, Agalawatta in support of Rohana Galeboda, the prospective UNP candidate for the Yatiyana in Agalwatta, Ajith P. Perera said a certain group was making a desperate attempt to get the local elections postponed on a technical issue.
“Such technical issues were not important because elections are urgently needed for the country,” he said.
The Deputy Minister said the delay in holding the local elections was due to the need to correct discrepancies created by the previous regime in the delimitation process. He said the UNP candidates and supporters should now gear themselves up and make necessary arrangements to face the local elections in January next year. “The system of elections were completely changed this time by the Yahapalana government. It is a mixture of the proportional representation and the first past the post systems,” he said.
