A Samurdhi Development Officer, G. A. Neel Shantha of Athurugiriya, has complained to the Supreme Court, that, during the third reading of the Bill titled, “Local Authorities Elections (Amendment) Bill”, major amendments had been introduced to the original Bill though they had not been included in the gazetted bill.
It had deprived the petitioner and many other classes of public servants including “Samurdhi Officers, Developments Officers, Grama Seva Niladaris” of the opportunity to contest the next LG elections, the petition has argued.
This violates their franchise and sovereignty of the people. It is arbitrary and discriminating. Hence it violates the Constitution.
Among the respondents are the Attorney General, the Chairman of the Elections Commission and the Elections Commission.
