The Ministry of Buddha Sasana yesterday suspended the Basnayaka Nilame of Ruhunu Kataragama Devalaya, D. P. Kumarage for three months pending an investigation into allegations against him.
Minister of Buddha Sasana Gamini Jayawickrama Perera said 16 allegations had been levelled against the Basnayaka Nilame and the decision to suspend him had been taken on the advice of the Attorney General.
Dilruwan Rajapakshe has been appointed the acting Basnayake Nilame.
Kumarage, a businessman from Kandy, was elected to the post of Basnayake Nilame of the Kataragama Devale, on April 28, 2015.
Kumarage told a media briefing, in Kandy, on Tuesday (10), that he had been informed of the minister’s decision to suspend him pending an investigation. He said he had been suspended without prior warning and there was a sinister move to replace him with a person close to the minster.
Kumarage said he would make representations to President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Mahanayake Theras of the three sects.
