The 45th Annual Sessions of the International Pepper Community Conference was inaugurated by president Maithripala Sirisena at Earl’s Regency Hotel in Kandy today (30).
Minister of primary industries Daya Gamage was the guest of honour at the three-day conference.
A pepper and spice exhibition was also opened, while winners of a school painting exhibition received their awards.
Addressing the event, minister Gamage said,
Your Excellency President Maithripala Sirisena, Hon. Ministers, Hon. Members of Parliament, the distinguished Invitees from our member countries, Hon. Members of the local bodies Provincial Councils, Pradeshiya Sabhas, and friends of the Pepper fraternity, ladies and gentlemen.
A warm Welcome to Sri Lanka, to the salubrious surroundings of Historical Kandy City and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the Dalada Maligawa of pristine glory.
It is very great pleasure to welcome you to this Conference of historical importance as the Minister in charge of Primary Industries, which includes cottage industries, crop cultivation Small and Medium Enterprises, and spice plantation, that go to make food very tasteful.
Sri Lanka is very proud, being able to hold the 45th Global Pepper Conference, this time, organized by the Primary Industries Ministry, headed by me as its Minister, the Export Agriculture Department of Sri Lanka and the International Pepper Community.
I as the Minister in charge of Primary Industries which covers a large segment of the crop cultivation and spice plantation, consider it a great privilege to welcome you, our most honored and distinguished delegates from the respective member countries and other distinguished invitees to this most prestigious conference, while Sri Lanka holds the chairmanship of the International Pepper Community.
The Global Pepper Conference Sri Lanka hosts this year, is the gateway to enter the World Market which avails great opportunity to those of us who look for the means of easy and profitable transaction avenues, this Conference being the meeting point of the producers, exporters and importers of variety of spices and pepper, the focal point of the conference.
I am of the view that the conference we attend right now will go down as a historical meeting, as, the delegates at this Conference, representing the much treasured Member Countries are scheduled to revise the IPC Standard Specifications for Pepper and Pepper based products, adopted, subject to approval at the 43rd Session of the IPC, held in Mysuru, India in November, 2015.
Dear President, we owe you much for your presence and finding time to be with us this morning despite your busy schedules to grace this occasion and commencing the deliberations of the conference for which purpose we have gathered here.
My distinguished Friends, My Ministry of Primary Industries and I myself express our great appreciation for your kind presence to make the event a success by sharing your valuable experiences in the field you represent. I, take this opportunity to say with all gladness of heart, to say, how grateful I am to you all for your ready response in accepting our invitation and sending messages of felicitation and wishing all success.
I also wish to thank as the Minister of the country which host this Global Conference on Pepper, those who are participating at this year Pepper/Spice exhibition to promote their produce, the leading pepper/spices players, processors, producers and exporters representing IPC Member countries and also other spices producing and consuming countries and the State officials who had greatly contributed to make this Conference in our country a memorable event.
