India to help end SL fuel crisis

President Maithripala Sirisena has received an assurance from Indian Premier Narendra Modi that India would extend all possible assistance to overcome current petrol shortage, an Indian High Commission spokesperson told The Island last night.

The assurance was given in the wake of Lanka Indian Oil Company (LIOC) making available 3,500 kl of petrol from its own stocks to the CPC.

The spokesperson said that PM Modi had phoned President Sirisena yesterday evening after tanker carrying 21,000 kl of petrol left for Sri Lanka. India also assured further shipments of petrol in addition to making available petrol from refinery at Kochi.
