House united in increasing SC judges’ allowances

A proposal moved by Prime Minister and Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs Ranil Wickremesinghe to revise the salaries and allowances of the Chief Justice and the judges of the Supreme Court was passed in Parliament without a vote.

A pensionable allowance amounting to 25% of the salary hitherto paid to Chief Justice and the SC Judges will be increased up to 50% with effect from 01 January 2018. It will be calculated on the basis of the newly revised salary.

The judges will be paid a monthly professional allowance of Rs. 150,000 per month, which is reckoned for pension purposes in place of the current special non-pensionable allowance of Rs. 15,000 per month.

It is Parliament which determines the salaries and allowances of the Chief Justice and the Judges of the Superior Courts in terms of Article 108 (1) of the Constitution.
