Government postpones May Day celebrations to May 7th due to Vesak

President Maithripala Sirisena on Tuesday said the May Day rallies and labor day celebrations will be held on the 7th of May this year instead of May 1 due to the Vesak Festival.

Speaking at a religious event in Colombo, President Sirisena said considering the Vesak Week coinciding with the May Day the cabinet had decided to move the May Day rallies and meetings to 7th May.

The decision has been reached following a request from the Maha Sangha and accordingly, the government would take measures to celebrate Vesak Full Moon Poya Day in an exhilarating manner, he said.

The Vesak full moon is commemorated on 29th and 30th of April and the Vesak Week will continue till May 3rd.

Accordingly, the May Day celebrations will be held on the 7th of May and that day is declared as a holiday.
