Government gets the nod to increase the number of high court judges

The  cabinet of ministers has granted approval to a proposal put forward by the Minister of Justice and Buddha Sasana Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe to increase the number of judges to the High Court.

The objective is to minimize the delays that may arise in the judicial system in the country in relation to the prosecutions and to make the process of prosecutions more efficient.

Accordingly the cabinet has approved the proposal to increase number of Judges to the High Court from 75 to 85. The relevant document will be prepared by the Legal Draftsman.

It is proposed to publish the Justice (Amendment) Bill in the government gazette as well. It will then be submitted to Parliament for approval.
