Gamini Senarath and others released on bail

Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne yesterday released on bail Gamini Senarath, the Chief of Staff of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and two other suspects, P. Kudabalage, the former General Manager of the Insurance Corporation and Neil Bandara Hapuhinna, the former Commissioner General of Samurdhi.

They have been charged with misusing four billion rupees in state funds to build a hotel in Hambantota.

Their counsel argued that there had been no abuse of public property; Rs. 18 billion had been approved by the Cabinet to build a Hotel Complex. Four billion rupees out of that amount had been taken from that to build a branch of that hotel at Hambantota.

Consequently, the Magistrate ordered their release on bail at Rs. 50,000 cash and two sureties of one million rupees for each suspect.
