Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that foreign investments in Sri Lanka have so far increased by 300 percent this year compared to 2014.
The Prime Minister made this reference while inaugurating the “FACETS Sri Lanka 2017”, the 27th International Gem & Jewellery Show at BMICH this morning.
Expressing his views after inaugurating the Exhibition, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said that the gem and jewellery industry should be upgraded to increase foreign exchange earnings by three fold.
The Sri Lankan Gem and Jewellery industry, is one of the most important foreign exchange earners to the local economy.
The Premier emphasized that the gem and jewellery industry should be developed and have to consider how the gem industry should be developed while keeping environmental concerns in mind.
He said some investors want to have a gem and jewellery industrial zone in Hambantota and there are others who want it in Katunayake or Kurunegala. “We will have to further discuss and decide,” he said.
The 27th edition of the Exhibition will take place from the 01st to the 04th of September at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Exhibition Centre in Colombo. On display will be Sri Lanka’s finest Gems & Jewellery.
