The government has decided to pay Rs. 1 million for loss of life due to the collapse of the Meethotamulla garbage dump, our news sources said.
The payment to the families of the deceased was made today (July 11) at the Auditorium of the Kolonnawa Divisional Secretariat.
A section of the mountainous landfill in Meethotamulla collapsed on 14 April this year causing a landslide that buried dozens of low-income homes and killed 32 people.
Member of Parliament SM Marikkar who participated in the awarding of compensations to the relatives of the deceased said that the government was pressured on several occasions to obtain compensation through a special cabinet approval.
