The Elections Commission has decided to call on the political parties in Sri Lanka to give a 25 percent or more opportunity for youth when choosing the candidates to contest for the upcoming local government polls.
A member of the Election Commission has said that this decision was made since it is a timely need to increase women and youth representation in politics of Sri Lanka and letters will be sent to political parties in the next week informing of the decision.
Provincial Councils Elections (Amendment) Act has raised women’s representation in provincial councils and amended the clauses on youth representation.
However, the Elections Commission is to inform the political parties to allocate 25 percent opportunities in the nomination lists for the election to youth.
The Election Commission has also decided to suggest the political parties to include people with special needs who wish to engage in active politics in their nomination lists.
