Dengue clean-up before schools reopen

The Ministry of Education has instructed all principals to carry out dengue eradication programmes at their schools prior to the commencement of the new school term on April 23.

A spokesperson for the Ministry said the principals had been instructed to implement the cleaning programmes on Sunday (22) with the assistance of teachers and parents. The South-Western monsoon rains are expected to increase mosquito breeding.

The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health said yesterday that 15703 suspected dengue cases had been reported this year and 15 deaths at the end of March. 2,413 cases have been reported from Colombo, while 1,416 and 1,075 cases have been reported from Gampaha and Kalutara districts. 878 cases have been reported in April so far.
