Court rejects appeal to recall warrant issued against Udayanga

The  court rejected an appeal to recall an open arrest warrant issued through the International Police (Interpol) against former Ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunga who is absconding.

When the case against the fugitive ex-diplomat was taken before the Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne today, the Magistrate rejected a request from his lawyers to withdraw the arrest warrant and suspend the ban on his diplomatic and normal passports.

Rejecting both demands, the magistrate said that Udayanga Weeratunga, who is being prosecuted on serious charges is absconding the court and such requests are even not appropriate to make.

The magistrate called the next hearing for November 02.

The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court on 19 October 2016 allowed the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) of the Police to issue an international warrant to arrest Weeratunga in connection with the investigation into the financial irregularities with regard to the MiG aircraft deal.
