Contempt of court case against Dr Padeniya fixed for inquiry

The Court of Appeal yesterday fixed for inquiry on June 5, the contempt of Court application, filed against Dr Anuruddha Padeniya, the President of the Government Medical Officers Association.

Dr Padeniya is accused of having insulted court by public reference to a Court of Appeal order, which said that SITAM, (Sri Lanka Institute of Technology and Medicine), medical graduates should be registered by Medical Officers of the state, as stated in Section 29 of the Medical Ordinance.

Dr. Padeniya allegedly participated in a protest rally in Colombo, condemning the Court of Appeal order.

Two social activists, Prof. Sarath Wijesuriya and Gamini Viyangoda have complained that Dr. Pardeniya should be charged for contempt of court. The protest rally took place on April 7, 2016.

Upul Jayasuriya PC appeared for the petitioner. Ravindranath Dabare appeared for Dr Padeniya.

The bench comprised Justice Preethi Padman Soorasena (President) and Justice Arjuna Obeysekera.
