Primary industries minister Daya Gamage today assumed duties, amidst Seth Pirith chanting by Maha Sangha, in his added social welfare portfolio at the ministry at level two of Sethsiripaya in Battaramulla.
Minister Ranjith Maddumabandara, deputy minister Dr. Anoma Gamage and ministry staff attended.
Speaking to the staff, minister Gamage said he was happy to receive a subject that would help serve the helpless people.
He noted that in addition to doing their duties, the ministry employees also got an opportunity to engage in meritorious deeds.

He recalled how committed and talented officials helped him within a very short period to complete the required work in his first garment factory under the late president Ranasinghe Premadasa’s 200 garment factories scheme.
He said such an era of skilled officials was needed again.
Minister Gamage also noted that with the use of profits from his businesses, he organized examination seminars, eye lense donations and gave assistance for surgeries through Dayasarana Development Foundation.
Speaking further, he said he would do his best to obtain contributions from at least 20 per cent of the country’s disabled population towards the economy.
Answering questions raised by the media, he said some children had not the economic means to look after their parents, and said that such matters should be tackled not with the law, but in accordance with religious thinking.
