While Sri Lanka and China negotiate the finer points of the Hambantota Industrial Zone project, an 18-member parliamentary delegation headed by Disaster Management Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, is scheduled leave on a nine-day visit to Beijing and Guangdong Province today.
Addressing a farewell reception for the departing delegation at Hilton Colombo, on Thursday night,Chinese Ambassador Cheng Xueyuan said that they would be able to see a peaceful, developing and friendly China, explore the huge potential for cooperation and better understand the meaning of joint mega projects between the two countries.
He told the gathering, which included Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, that he was confident the visit would be very fruitful and interesting.
Beijing, Ambassador Cheng explained was the capital and center of Politics and Culture of China, while Guangdong was the country’s leading econom , with a population of 11 million and a GDP of 1.4 trillion USD last year, which was almost the same as Russia.
“You will be going to see Canton, Shenzhen and Huizhou cities and visit ports, IT companies and factories , he told the delegates, who would be hosts of the Chinese government.
